History of
Glen Acres Golf & Country Club
Glendale Golf and Country Club
The Glendale Golf and Country Club was established by Seattle’s Jewish community in 1924. It was built as a 9-hole / 18-tee golf course by renowned architect Arthur Vernon Macan.
The clubhouse, located just off Glendale Drive, was completed in 1926. Monthly dues were $16.50, with coffee 10 cents and a sandwich 25 cents. ‘Delinquent Members’ names to be posted in Club House’ appeared on the bottom of the invoice.
In 1958 the entire club membership moved to its present location in Bellevue. Kinney Leonard then purchased the golf course and clubhouse. Leonard developed and sold condominiums on the west side adjacent to the golf course. The name was changed to the Glen Acres Golf and Country Club and sold to the homeowners.
Arthur Vernon Macan
Macan designed and built the Glendale / Glen Acres golf course in 1924.
Macan was regarded as the Pacific Northwest’s most prolific golf course designer of his day. His designs include Broadmoor and Inglewood in Seattle, Fircrest in Tacoma, Royal Colwood in Victoria, and Alderwood in Portland.
He was elected to the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Hall of Fame in 1989. He promoted the idea that players should think their way through a round of golf. His unique herringbone drainage systems eliminated the accumulation of water around, on, and under the putting surfaces.
Kinney Leonard
Leonard purchased the land from the Glendale Golf and Country Club in 1958. He incorporated it as Glen Acres Inc. and built condominium units on the property adjacent to the west side of the golf course. The original asking price on these units began at $27,950 in 1968.
The Glen Acres Golf and Country Club was purchased by the Glen Acres Homeowners as common grounds.
